“What do you do for a living?”
Not exactly a trick question. Still, I stood there speechless. The clerk at the Verizon store looked up from his computer screen and stared at me with a puzzled expression. When he asked me the question, he probably didn’t even really care about the answer. He was just trying to be friendly while I waited for him to activate my new phone. But since there was a delay in my response, now he was curious.
“I…uh…have a couple of properties I look after.”
He kept staring at me, his brow furrowed. I stammered around some more.
“I mean, I have some rental properties that I take care of.”
“Okay,” he said, looking back at his computer screen and giving a little shrug, as if to say, “Was it really that hard of a question?”
It's that time of year again. Congress is on its lengthy August recess, and candidates have only a few months until the November elections. Just shy of the coveted midterms, both Republican and Democratic politicians will undoubtedly up the ante during these few weeks of downtime. But as we all clearly witnessed last year, it's the GOP and Tea Party that readily pull out the age-old guaranteed weapon of choice: fear mongering. In the past, it's been everything from homophobia to health care to socialism to abortion rights and all in between. The one subject however that consistently delivers without fail is the right's wedge issue of this 2010 election: Islamophobia.
This has been a painful and turbulent week for this country. Just when we thought people were starting to come together, bridges were being built and brighter tomorrows were looming on the horizon, here come not one but two individuals who have set this country and white womanhood back at least 100 years.
In Texas, 31 percent of Hispanic eligible voters are 18 to 29 years old. These young Latinos are on their way to becoming the majority demographic overall among Texas Latino voters, a position that is currently held by 30- to 44-year-old Latinos. “Couple these numbers with the fact that Latino voters comprise almost 40 percent of eligible Texas Democratic voters,” wrote Marisa Treviño for Spot On in 2008. “It's an implication that deserves attention.”
Wall Street reversed its fortunes by seizing total control of the U.S. state and its treasure. No greater conflict of interest can be imagined than that which exists between bought-off Democratic and Republican office holders and corporations that are deemed "too big to fail." Yet "they're trying to burn" Black Congresswoman Maxine Waters "for the crime of giving the little guy an opportunity to plead his own case."
Colorlines: A rapidly expanding federal program that checks the immigration statuses of anyone booked into state and local jails is creating SB 1070 like conditions all over the country, according to recently obtained data.
The program, called Secure Communities, sends Immigration and Custom’s Enforcement (ICE) information on anyone in police custody. So far, it’s resulted in almost 50,000 deportations.
Former Fugee member Pras sat down the other day and explained why he won’t be supporting his cousin Wyclef Jean and his bid for Presidency in Haiti. He explained that he doesn’t think Jean has a comprehensive plan for the beleaguered country. He cited the 1.2 million people who are currently living in tent cities and Wyclef’s lack of details in crafting a plan to deal with them. He says that Haiti needs a short term and long term strategy and doesn't feel Wyclef has developed them.
