Fighting for Media Justice in Texas-Meet Carl Settles

Carl SettlesWe caught up with long time media justice advocate Carl Settles out of Austin, Texas. He's a long time fixture that folks are likely to see at any major event. He's not the proverbial gadfly but instead a man who assesses a situation and tries to figure out how communities who aren't at the table can be included. He's the man who strives to give voice to the voiceless and empower people to speak truth to power on their own terms...

We caught up with Carl Settles the other day at the RISE Conference and talked to him about the Media Diversity Council he founded and the scores of young people he works with. He explained why it's important that there be better representation in the media for communities of color and Texas in general. He noted that POC are often maligned and overlooked and depicted as steretypes. Texas itself gets a bad rap as far as National media is concerned. We here in the Lone Star state are boxed into nagging stereotypes.

Carl lays out the reasons why Texans of color have to step up their media game. He explains how and why we should be taking advantge of new technologies.

Lastly Carl lets us know about upcoming events and projects that he and his organization are involved in including a 'Tweet Up' at SXSW and the annual Show Us Your Reel competition and Award show.
