Immediately after Arizona passed it's controversial anti-immigration law SB 1070, leaders in Texas weighed in and gave their take on it. Some conservative Lawmakers immediately launched a petition drive to Governor Rick Perry, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, and Speaker of the House Joe Straus demanding that they get serious about dealing with the invasion of illegals that is transforming Texas, and give us a bill that's just as powerful and effective as the one that just became law in Arizona. This peitition was put forth via the Peter Morrison Report.
Former Houston Mayor and current gubernatorial candidate Bill White has been making a lot of noise lately on the national stage. He's been getting quite a bit of press including articles in a couple of well read publications like The NY Times and The Hill. There seems to be a lot of interest in whether or not the popular mayor can knock off Texas' longest-serving governor Rick Perry and swing the political pendulum of Texas in a decisive leftward direction even though for the record White likes to describe himself as a middle of the road type of guy. Be that as it may, with Rick Perry seemingly responding affirmatively to the loud and angry voices of the Tea Party, the more he moves to the right, the more White starts to shine.
Like many throughout the state, last night I tuned in to watch the Democratic debate between business owner Farouk Shami and former Houston Mayor Bill White. White is the favorite among the Dems and for a state that is politically and culturally changing in many areas, he symbolizes that potential. However, while I’d take White over Mr Good Hair Perry and Cheerleader Kay Bailey, I feel he came across way too cautious and I know I’m definitely not alone in my feelings.
We caught this footage of Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Bill White speaking at the Rally for New Leadership at Scholz Garten in Austin, TX on December 6, 2009. Mayor White spoke about Texas values, his ability to bring politically diverse groups of people together, and the critical role education will play in the future of Texas.

Today (Oct 28th 2009) Houston City Council will sit and consider a controversial bill that will deputize Houston police officers to essentially act as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents. The program is known as 287(g). This measure has come under fire for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it was rejected a while back and both current Mayor Bill White and Houston’s police chief Harold L. Hurtt came out against it. They understand, as do so many community members, that having the police act as ICE agents can lead to an increase in unneccessary tension between police and the community.
Bill White is the best choice for the U. S. Senate seat for four important reasons:
• His extensive experience in both the legislative and executive branches of the federal government leaves him the Democrat best qualified and prepared to serve our state in the U. S. Senate.
• Having served as a precinct chair and state party chair, his Party credentials are superior.
