The History of the Latin Quarters Nightclub 'The LQ' pt1

The Latin Quarter or the 'LQ' as it was affectionately called will always have a pivotal place in Hip Hop history. According to DJ Paradise of X-Clan who managed the club during it's hey day in the mid 80s, the LQ was more important than the Apollo because all the record executives, industry taste makers and label reps frequented the club.

It wasn't unheard of for an artist to go down to the LQ on a Friday, kick off a great performance and have a record deal by that Monday.

The LQ was also the place that bore witness to many people's first performances including MC Hammer who's chilly reception inspired him to go back, blow up and come back to take on NY in the song 'Turn this Mutha Out'.

It bore witness to one of Public Enemy's first performances where Mele-Mel rattled Chuck D's nerves by screaming from the floor' get them off the stage, they aren't Hip Hop. A year later Mel became one of their biggest supporters.

Meet Anita Tijoux-Hip Hop Artist from Chile

We caught up with Chilean born emcee Anita Tijoux who made lots of waves during SXSW 2010. It was her first trip to the US as she celebrated the release of her new album 1977. The title represents the year she was born along the pioneering days of Hip Hop in the Bronx. Anita who is an astute student of Hip Hop music and culture noted that its important to reference and pay tribute to the foundation. Anita through her flows, subject matter and study of other emcees has managed to do just that-pay homage.

We started off our interview by getting an update on the situation in Chile. She explained that many people in her country are suspicious after the 8.8 earthquake and they fear another shoe is going to drop. Many believe that the shaking was man-made-caused by HARP...
