By now the country and the rest of the world knows about the historic victory garnered by former Houston comptroller Annise Parker to become Houston’s next mayor. Parker, who is openly gay and has been with her partner for over 19 years, made history on a couple of fronts.
We caught up with Houston artist and promoter Craig Long aka BBC. He talked to us about Houston's thriving underground scene and how there's a lot of unity within it. He also talked us about his thoughts on the Houston mayoral race. He gave a personal message to candidates Gene Locke and Annise Parker. He wants them to step it up and fix his streets. BBC explains the significance behind that.
Downtown Houston was on fire this past weekend as a few hundred folks showed up for the Discovery Green Living Life Festival. Headlining the acts were Marc Bamuthi Joseph a spoken word artists and playwright along with Hip Hop icon MC Lyte. The festival was the jump off for a year long conversation that will help facilitate the fusing of Hip Hop, politics, art, and Green Sustainable living. Both Lyte and Joseph are strong believers in the power of art to help uplift, educate, and inspire communities. Their track record over the years has more than proven that.
It’ll be interesting to see how the campaigns between Annise Parker and Gene Locke shape up over the next few weeks leading up to the Dec 12th run off. We’ll be watching to see if the gloves come off to a point that race, gender and sexual orientation play into people’s decision-making. We’ll also be watching to see how much outreach these two candidates do. Will they play it safe and focus on turning out likely voters or will they tap into the tens of thousands of eligible voters who stayed home this Nov 3rd? It’ll also be interesting to see who fellow candidates City Councilman Peter Brown and conservative Roy Morales endorse and whether or not it would make a difference. The playing field seems wide open and at this point if neither candidate fails to reach out and get large numbers of people to the polls, there will be an opportunity for an ambitious block of people to galvanize their community and get them to weigh in on the contest. As you read the Houston Chronicle article below we encourage to think about what sorts of things you really want to have in a mayor and then start hitting Ms. Parker or Mr. Locke up. They need to hear from you.
With early voting in full swing and the election day less than a week away… people are still up in the air as to who they should vote for when it comes to Mayor of Houston. Who ever sits in that chair will be yielding a lot of power and will set a tone for one of the nation’s most exciting and rapidly growing cities. Houston is on the move and it needs a mayor who will set the pace. It needs a mayor who can make an increasingly young population feel like they are in touch - a mayor who understands the pressing issues impacting young adults. They range from job opportunities to education to affordable housing. Houston needs a mayor that will make a city that has large African-American, Latino, Asian and Gay & Lesbian population feel like their respective needs are being met. Below you will find some links to articles and videos that can hopefully lend some insight...
UPDATE: (10/20/09, 12:30PM) Off the Kuff points to a quick survey on bikes to add to this discussion. Local bike activist Peter Wang asked the Mayoral candidates whether they would get METRO to allow bicycles on light rail and got responses from all four major candidates.
The next Houston mayor will have a large amount of influence on the city’s land use and transportation, particularly since METRO just started construction on 30 more miles of light rail that could significantly alter the urban form of the City of Houston. Several sources have recently detailed the candidates’ views on these issues. Houston Tomorrow does not endorse any candidate. Early voting begins today and lasts until Friday, October 30. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. For more information on the election, including polling locations and hours, visit the Harris County Clerk’s website.
Who should be Houston’s next mayor? We recently attended a debate that featured 3 of the 4 candidates and got to interview 2 of the candidates. Listen to what they had to say, drop us a line and weigh in... We will be posting up some of the audience reaction we got...
