Colorlines: 50,000 Deported From County Jails, And Counting

Colorlines: A rapidly expanding federal program that checks the immigration statuses of anyone booked into state and local jails is creating SB 1070 like conditions all over the country, according to recently obtained data.
The program, called Secure Communities, sends Immigration and Custom’s Enforcement (ICE) information on anyone in police custody. So far, it’s resulted in almost 50,000 deportations.

Houston City Council Put 287(g) Back on the Table, but at What Cost?
Submitted by Southern Shift on Wed, 2009-10-28 16:09 Authored by Davey DToday (Oct 28th 2009) Houston City Council will sit and consider a controversial bill that will deputize Houston police officers to essentially act as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents. The program is known as 287(g). This measure has come under fire for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it was rejected a while back and both current Mayor Bill White and Houston’s police chief Harold L. Hurtt came out against it. They understand, as do so many community members, that having the police act as ICE agents can lead to an increase in unneccessary tension between police and the community.
