Colorlines: A rapidly expanding federal program that checks the immigration statuses of anyone booked into state and local jails is creating SB 1070 like conditions all over the country, according to recently obtained data.
The program, called Secure Communities, sends Immigration and Custom’s Enforcement (ICE) information on anyone in police custody. So far, it’s resulted in almost 50,000 deportations.

Immigration enforcement under the Obama administration has continued almost unchanged from the “enforcement-only” regime perfected by the Bush administration, applying criminal enforcement tactics to the civil immigration system.
Immediately after Arizona passed it's controversial anti-immigration law SB 1070, leaders in Texas weighed in and gave their take on it. Some conservative Lawmakers immediately launched a petition drive to Governor Rick Perry, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, and Speaker of the House Joe Straus demanding that they get serious about dealing with the invasion of illegals that is transforming Texas, and give us a bill that's just as powerful and effective as the one that just became law in Arizona. This peitition was put forth via the Peter Morrison Report.
The other day while doing our daily Hard Knock Radio show we were blessed to have Felipe Matos, Carlos Roa and Juan Rodriguez from the Trail of Dreams come to the studio to talk about their historic meeting with Sheriff Joe Arpaio over immigration. Also in the studio was former Minister of Culture of the Black Panther party Emory Douglass.. Wow what a moment.. Intergenerational, cultural and just seeing freedom fighters old and new break bread...
We love the work 16 year old Gabriel Padilla does.. He's an amazing talent. For those who don't recall we featured his excellent 30 minute film on gentrification..This month we have his coverage of the May Day Resistence March in Austin..

I've written pretty extensively about the various attempts to divide Black and Brown communities over the immigration issue. At the root of this are racists who hate both Black and Brown but will conveniently show up and suggest to either group why they should hate and distrust the other. Blacks are often told that Browns are taking away jobs and that gangs on the west coast are attacking us indiscriminately.
This is what True Hip Hop is all about.. I was very excited to see this..It apparently didn’t require a whole lot of red tape… It was simply a case of artists coming together and spitting truth to power. Commercial artists who we routinely hear on the radio missed abig opportunity by remaining silent and not taking the initiative to address this important issue..
Big shout out to the following Arizona artists… DJ John Blaze, Tajji Sharp, Yung Face, Mr. Miranda, Ocean, Da’aron Anthony, Atllas, Chino D, Nyhtee, Pennywise, Rich Rico, and Da Beast. Enjoy this video- for the new song ‘Back to Arizona-Rappers Protest Immigration Bill

Language is the tool we use to frame our thoughts and thought processes. Every time we use, or tolerate the use around us of the terms “illegal” and “illegal alien” we are allowing white American nationalists, white racists, to speak from our mouths. That can't lead to anyplace good.
Almost 20 years ago, sometime in 1991, I found myself on local CBS station KPIX in a heated debate about the rap group Public Enemy. They had come under-fire for doing a video to the song 'By The Time I get to Arizona'. The song was a protest against Arizona lawmakers who at that time steadfastly refused to go along with honoring the Martin Luther King holiday. This was 7 years after it was signed into law by President Ronald Regan who had also refused to honor him but was forced to sign the legislation into law because he was Congress had handed him a veto-proof bill.
Why should folks in Texas be concerned about the new immigration law in Arizona? Because as we speak there are forces right here in the Lone Star state trying to bring the Arizona Apartheid-like law to Texas.. In a recent edition of the Peter Morrison Report a letter petitioning Rick Perry Lt Gov Dehurts and Speaker Straus was sent asking them to follow Arizon's lead.

We know darn well most of us don't want this law in place. Folks in Texas are gonna have to gear up and get ready to fight..
