A lot of times we take some pretty hard swipes at folks who don't do right by our communities and we make no bones about it. This week we wanna shower someone with praise and a bit of caution.
We're talking about the top law enforcement officer in the land US Attorney General Eric Holder. In the past few weeks he's been on a roll. First he filed a law suit against the Neanderthals who sit in office in the Apartheid state of Arizona. Holder like many of us sees the new immigration bill SB 1070 that is not only too far reaching, but also not within the rights of the people trying to enforce it.
It has been a year and a half since the fateful night a New Year’s celebration turned deadly for a 22-year-old Black man in California. He wasn’t engaged in a gang transaction gone wrong, nor was he evading police or hiding somewhere as a fugitive. No, Oscar Grant was handcuffed face down on the ground with a police officer’s knee pinning his neck when another cop decided to draw his weapon and shoot him in the back. The single bullet ended his young life as his friends and a train station full of people watched on in horror. And now, on the heels of a verdict in the trial against the accused officer, Johannes Mehserle, the revulsion only intensifies.
On the eve of the verdict to one of the most watched and controversial trials around a police shooting, we dedicate this video to those seeking Justice for the murder of Oscar Grant...
Inspired by what's been going down with the trial, we flipped the last speech from Martin Luther King's.. 'I've been to the Mountain Top' and mashed it up with BOB's 'Nothing on You' .. we juxtaposed it with footage from the early Oscar Grant rallies and Black Panthers rallies held in the past in Oakland, California.. The dancers are from Detroit.. we met them during Allied Media Conference i Enjoy
Here at the US Social Forum in Detroit we caught up with longtime Austin based activist Debbie Russell and spoke to her about the growing trend of corporations using cops as a private army or law enforcement wing. Our good friends at Alternet just published a Mother Jones article called Louisiana Off-Duty Cops Working for BP? Corporate Police State Watch...
I been saying this for a minute and will most likely do a radio show on this later this week, but as the economy worsens and the gap between the Haves and Have Nots widens, we are going to have some serious problems. One disturbing note is that an estimated 75% of the people do not trust the government. That’s playing out with the rise of militias, increasing threats by Tim McVeigh like domestic terrorists and just an overall overt disrespect for anyone in office. A lot of anger has been directed at President Obama, but increasingly more and more ire is being turned toward anyone in office.
While many of us have been focused on the hostilities associated with the Tea Party movement, we have forgotten that one of the more sinister forces at work showing disdain for people in Black and Brown communities are police. The people who we pay through our tax dollars to protect and serve seem to be on a rampage as of late and sadly getting away with it...
We continue our interview w/Houston activist and spoken word artist Deniz Lopez, aka Dee-Colonize, who touches upon the history of indigenous and Brown folks in Houston. She says it's still a border town to her. She also discusses the challnge of having Black & Brown unity in the sprawling city. We conclude by touching on police brutality issues. In 2009 60 people were shot by police in Houston and Harris county. Dee-Colonize does a a spoken word piece.
