Now that Healthcare Reform has passed the next fault-line in the political landscape is Immigration... Not immigration which has suddenly allowed thousands of people to some how come over from Russia and populate places like Brighton Beach, Brooklyn... Not immigration from places like former Yugoslavia. We're talking about immigration from Mexico and other places throughout Latin America resulting in people all being placed under the umbrella of Mexican and along with that every conceivable negative stereotype.
There’s a nasty stereotype about Americans that unfortunately gets reinforced from time to time by people who personify the ugliest of traits. One understands the art of political posturing. One also understands that in trying to get a point of view across, less than flattering things will be said. The rule of thumb has always been when playing politics you can go hard on the issue but not the people.
By now everyone has heard about the racial firestorm that has been brewing because of some remarks attributed to Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, in a new book called Game Change.
So everyone has been talking about Saturday’s Tea Party March on Washington and how it represents a sea change of sorts. Perhaps it does, perhaps it doesn’t. Whether it was 1.2 million people or tens of thousands who showed up, it all has to be put in context. First, we already know close to 46 million people voted for John McCain and Sarah Palin so close to half the country that voted has a different political outlook on things. We should not be suprised or intimidated by how vocal that opposition is. We have our own troops in large numbers.
So right now the state is a buzz as US Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison officially announced that she will be tossing her hat into the ring to go head to head with fellow Republican, Governor Rick Perry, who is the longest serving governor in the state’s history. Her announcement, which came on Monday August 17th and had a barrage of harsh criticisms for Perry, kicks off a five day state wide speaking tour. This looks to be a be very bitter and brutal race which will undoubtedly draw national attention.
