When liberal leaning Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens announced that he was retiring, many of us who voted for President Obama assumed that with a 59 seat majority in the Senate, he would pick a justice that would reflect some of the progressive leaning views of the millions who voted for him... Apparently we figured wrong. Bruce Dixon of the Black Agenda Report goes in on Obama's Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan and leaves us wondering if the Democrats are worth supporting. Thousands of phone calls, emails and letters flooded the office of Governor Rick Perry who seemed unmoved and unphased to grant Hank Skinner a stay of execution so he could get DNA testing to prove his innocence. Its a claim he has always made since the 1993 New Year's eve triple killing of his then live in girlfriend Twila Busby and her two adult sons.
When we got wind that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' wife Virginia was launching a Tea Party organization called Liberty Central Inc, all we could do is throw our hands up in exasperation. This newest affiliation with the Tea Party is dedicated to uplifting conservative principles... So much for impartiality on the nation's highest court. So much for 'justice being blind' and holding no allegience to political idealogy...
There’s so much one can say and write about last month’s Supreme Court ruling that allows corporations to weigh in and spend unlimited amounts on campaign contributions. One thing is certain - it’s about to get nasty and ugly. The bottom line is, no matter how many ways people try to justify this ruling under the umbrella of ‘free speech’, it’s only a matter of time before the realization hits that it’s not exactly Free Speech when only the rich and powerful have access and can afford to voice their opinions on traditional powerful mediums.
