Here at the US Social Forum in Detroit we caught up with longtime Austin based activist Debbie Russell and spoke to her about the growing trend of corporations using cops as a private army or law enforcement wing. Our good friends at Alternet just published a Mother Jones article called Louisiana Off-Duty Cops Working for BP? Corporate Police State Watch...
Immediately after Arizona passed it's controversial anti-immigration law SB 1070, leaders in Texas weighed in and gave their take on it. Some conservative Lawmakers immediately launched a petition drive to Governor Rick Perry, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, and Speaker of the House Joe Straus demanding that they get serious about dealing with the invasion of illegals that is transforming Texas, and give us a bill that's just as powerful and effective as the one that just became law in Arizona. This peitition was put forth via the Peter Morrison Report.

Your presence is needed at this week's Austin City Council Meeting, *Thursday, May 27th @ 10AM*. The Council will be voting to sign an interlocal agreement which will make the Austin Regional Intelligence Center (ARIC) operational.
The controversial social studies curriculum process is coming to an end. Public testimony will be heard at the State Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, May 19, and we expect a vote on these standards to take place the following day. We need you to stand up to the State Board of Education by attending our rally on Wednesday, May 19. Or testifying in front of the board. Or both!
Former Houston Mayor and current gubernatorial candidate Bill White has been making a lot of noise lately on the national stage. He's been getting quite a bit of press including articles in a couple of well read publications like The NY Times and The Hill. There seems to be a lot of interest in whether or not the popular mayor can knock off Texas' longest-serving governor Rick Perry and swing the political pendulum of Texas in a decisive leftward direction even though for the record White likes to describe himself as a middle of the road type of guy. Be that as it may, with Rick Perry seemingly responding affirmatively to the loud and angry voices of the Tea Party, the more he moves to the right, the more White starts to shine.
The story around Robert Hicks and his group Deacons for Defense have all but been erased from public consciousness. You check on familiar touch points like YouTube and there's nothing there. Pictures are hard to find and articles are scant. The thought of armed Black men standing up to the KKK and successfully protecting lives and propert during the harsh days of the Jim Crow South is a scary thought for many. The truth of the matter is many African Americans did not sit back and just allow themselves to be beaten and terrorized by the KKK. Hicks represented an underplayed part of our history..
I been saying this for a minute and will most likely do a radio show on this later this week, but as the economy worsens and the gap between the Haves and Have Nots widens, we are going to have some serious problems. One disturbing note is that an estimated 75% of the people do not trust the government. That’s playing out with the rise of militias, increasing threats by Tim McVeigh like domestic terrorists and just an overall overt disrespect for anyone in office. A lot of anger has been directed at President Obama, but increasingly more and more ire is being turned toward anyone in office.
One would think with the last week's conviction and sentencing of Scott Roeder the lunatic responsible for murdering abortion doctor George Tiller that other would be 'domestic terrorists' would get the message to to find another way to protest. Sadly for some they have become emboldened. Such is seemingly the case with Erlyndon Joseph Lo who has threatned abortion clinics in Dallas.
Despite the growth in the development of Black, Latino, Native American, Asian and other cultural history curricula throughout the country, if we take a look at the current state of education and how it affects our youth, we can safely say that we are in the same state that we were back then, if not worse.
Thousands of phone calls, emails and letters flooded the office of Governor Rick Perry who seemed unmoved and unphased to grant Hank Skinner a stay of execution so he could get DNA testing to prove his innocence. Its a claim he has always made since the 1993 New Year's eve triple killing of his then live in girlfriend Twila Busby and her two adult sons.
The bloody-minded, death-obsessed state of Texas, which has already
demonstrably executed at least one innocent man, Cameron Todd
Willingham (who was falsely accused and ultimately killed by the
state for the alleged arson "murder" of his two little children when
in fact they'd died because of a fire caused by an electrical fault),
may be about to execute yet another innocent man.
We are putting the final touches on our Travis County Democratic Convention, and I am convinced that this gathering will be both inspiring and loads of fun.
In addressing the issue of Black/ Brown unity we caught up with popular rappers Fat Joe, Ice Cube, Immortal Technique and others and asked them to address the issue...
Fat Joe spoke at the Hip Hop Summit in 2001 and explained the political importance of the two groups coming together…
With Texas Congressman Ron Paul winning the straw poll at last week's CPAK convention for who should be the next President, a few things came to the surface. First, we saw evidence of a split in the Republican Party when Paul got booed after it was announced he won. The conclusion I drew is that many in the GOP aren't too fond of the Libetarian oriented ideology of Paul and many of his followers. The other thing that came up is Paul's association with white supremacist groups who to this day express admiration for him.
Two years ago during the New Hampshire primaries I interviewed Paul and asked him how he felt about having organizations like the Ku Klux Klan donating money to his campaign...
Race became an issue in the Democratic primary for governor today.
Farouk Shami, the millionaire hair care products maker who's running, said he doesn't find many white people willing to work, so he says he hires Hispanics and blacks instead.
He made the comments responding to a question about whether the state should crack down on employers hiring illegal immigrants.
I would like to suggest that the articles in last week's Dallas Morning News regarding the resignation of State Rep. (D) Terri Hodge be distributed to your audience. I am personally fed up with the corruption WITHIN the Democratic Party -- many of the people in and around the electoral process see it as nothing more than a money-making opportunity for sale to the highest bidder.
Let's spread the word! Call the League of Women Voters of the Austin Area and we'll send out our top-notch Census speaker to provide you and your organization with all the information you need to participate effectively in this ultra important government research.
A couple of months ago Detroit rap artist and activist Invincible touched down in Austin and San Antonio to share her musical talents and weigh in on an issue many in the community had been grappling with - Gentrification. Invincible noted that poor people being displaced from their neighborhood by more af fluent residents was a huge deal in Detroit, so much so that she and her partner Finale did a song about it and accompanied it with a mini-documentary called Locust.
A while back we featured a story that talked about the debate taking place within the Texas State Board of Education about what sort of historical figures should be featured in text books.
By now the country and the rest of the world knows about the historic victory garnered by former Houston comptroller Annise Parker to become Houston’s next mayor. Parker, who is openly gay and has been with her partner for over 19 years, made history on a couple of fronts.
UPDATE: Bill White IS running for Governor of Texas. Click HERE to read more about his announcement in Houston earlier today.
If you wanna understand the political terrain of the great state of Texas, we urge you to peep this recent article written by MattTX of the Swing State Project... He gives a great historical and current breakdown of Texas and where its headed.
PHARR, Nov. 12 – Two victories in one day. That is how the departure of Lou Dobbs from CNN and the firing of a Texas elections administrator for making disparaging remarks about Spanish-speaking voters is being viewed by some.
“Two victories on the same day, this is great news. It shows our country is coming alive and that Latinos cannot be denigrated anymore. When we unite, we have power,” said Martha Sanchez, community activist for La Unión del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) in Mission.
Today (Oct 28th 2009) Houston City Council will sit and consider a controversial bill that will deputize Houston police officers to essentially act as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents. The program is known as 287(g). This measure has come under fire for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it was rejected a while back and both current Mayor Bill White and Houston’s police chief Harold L. Hurtt came out against it. They understand, as do so many community members, that having the police act as ICE agents can lead to an increase in unneccessary tension between police and the community.
When criminals are about to be caught, they try to hide their wrongdoing. When drug dealers hear the police sirens, they dump the stash in the alley or flush it down the toilet. When the Nazi officers in the concentration camps heard the allied forces approaching, they destroyed—and in many cases murdered—the evidence.
There’s something about the light of day when it shines its truth upon you.
Today marks the beginning of early voting on 11 proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution, as well as many elections for local candidates. Early voting goes through October 30th, but if you can't make it over the next two weeks you will have one final shot on the actual election day, Tuesday, November 3rd.
Homeowners in Fifth Ward are speaking out against Houston Independent School District’s (HISD) plan to use eminent domain to acquire their properties situated next to Dogan Elementary School.
HISD wants to expand the school but has yet to give clear information according to Council member Jarvis Johnson, who held a press conference on Sunday, October 11, 2009 in front of the home of 86-year-old Elizabeth Williams.
The U.S. Census Bureau’s latest population estimates show that Latinos comprise 39.3 percent of the population of Harris County. In spite of the fact that Latinos are now the largest population group in the county, they only constitute 15 percent of the County’s 1.9 million registered voters. Yet, the relevance of the Latino vote and its promise cannot be denied.
I always find this concept of Texas secession interesting. I especially find it interesting when I see and hear the way it's being framed. Words like ‘Freedom‘ ‘Independence‘ and ‘Oppression‘ are used suggesting that it's a noble endeavor and not something sinister. Some find the conversation compelling when it focuses on our main two parties Republicans and Democrats being a thorn in our collective sides that needs to be done away with. There’s lots of tough talk from secessionist about dissatisfaction with the Federal government which is very relatable when one looks at high unemployment rates, Wall Street Bankers getting bailed out, mismanaged wars and no Universal healthcare. All of this makes a secession argument intriguing.
